And the only comfort he would receive from his expired lover would be the sounds of her plucked shamisen strings, his fingers guiding hers, the muted tones echoing summer ghost's cries during the hot, stagnant nights. Sandalwood strings swirl in the air, swaying to the hollow hymn.

This is my second piece for :iconmythchan: and :icongloombox:'s fanart contest for their upcoming book: Apologue. I had the idea that maybe in a futile effort to hear some sort of sound from his lover again, Shem would first (before she started to decay too much) try to make an instrument out of her (OR PERHAPS A TABLE?!). I should have had her covered in wire so it would have obvious that he could bend her to his liking, but whatever.

wow im in love with this =]
i think its beautiful to have the idea of preserving a lover as an instrument; the multiple incenses are a nice realistic touch to remind us death is not sweet.

I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing. ♣
Sandalwood strings? How do you make strings out of sandalwood? They'd just snap. You'd be better off with catgut.

Lovely *and* creepy!
Seriously, tho, beautiful hair and face and even the creepy instrument/leg bits are pretty, too <3
Sandalwood strings was referring to the swirls of incense rising in the air, as opposed to the actual strings on her body. Sorry for the confusion.
Oh ok, fair enough.
Cool picture, mate :-)
